Product Description
The Cummins 4BT is a 3.9-liter, water-cooled, inline 4-cylinder turbodiesel from the B-series, featuring a cast-iron block with direct cylinder bores and a cast-iron cross-flow head with 2 valves per cylinder (8 total). Its OHV valve train uses a camshaft gear-driven by the crankshaft, operating rocker arms through tappets. Early versions employed a mechanical P7100 injection pump, with direct mechanical injection. The standard 4BT is turbocharged without an intercooler, while the 4BTA adds aftercooling and a lower 16.5:1 compression ratio for higher boost, improved power, and torque, making it better suited for small trucks and pickups. A naturally aspirated 4B version with 18.5:1 compression was also offered for industrial use. Typical output for the 4BT is around 105 hp, but power varied by application. Though compact and durable, the 4BT is less balanced than the 6-cylinder 6BT, leading to more vibration. Its robustness made it popular in commercial vans and a wide range of industrial equipment including generators, drilling rigs, pumps, and wood chippers.
