Product Description
The Cummins 6BT is a 5.9-liter inline-6 turbodiesel introduced in 1984, originally developed for Case agricultural equipment before becoming the best-known B-Series engine in trucks and buses. It gained massive popularity in the 1989–1998 Dodge Ram pickups, where its 12-valve OHV design with a cast-iron block and head, gear-driven timing components, mechanical injection, and Holset turbochargers delivered exceptional low-end torque and superior fuel economy compared to gasoline V8s. Early models used a Bosch VE44 rotary pump (with some CAV units), while 1994+ versions adopted the Bosch P7100 inline pump. Turbo setups included the Holset H1C (1989–1993), WH1 (1994), and HX35 (1994–1998), with an air-to-air intercooler added from 1991. A grid heater in the intake replaced glow plugs for cold starts. The 6BT was paired with transmissions such as the Chrysler 47RH automatic, NV4500 manual, and GETRAG G360 manual. Known as the “12-valve Cummins,” it remained in production until 1998 before being succeeded by the 24-valve 5.9L ISB common-rail engine.
