Product Description
The Mercedes-Benz OM651 is a family of in-line four-cylinder diesel engines introduced in October 2008 as a replacement for the OM646 and OM642 series, produced in Stuttgart, Germany. The main design goals were part-sharing across the line, suitability for both longitudinal and transverse mounting, improved fuel efficiency, and compliance with Euro 5 (later Euro 6) standards.
Structurally, the engine uses a cast-iron block, an aluminum 16-valve head with hydraulic lifters, and a combined timing drive from a roller chain, gears, and balancer shafts. Depending on the version, it is fitted with either an IHI VV20/VV21 variable geometry turbocharger or a BorgWarner R2S bi-turbo system. Variants below 100 kW (136 hp) generally use a single turbo, while versionsabove 125 kW (170 hp) are equipped with twin turbos.
The OM651 was available mainly in DE18 LA (1796 cc) and DE22 LA (2143 cc) versions, with outputs ranging from 107 hp to 204 hp.
