Product Description
The Mercedes M278 is a 4.7-liter (4,663 cc) twin-turbocharged V8 engine introduced in 2010 to replace the M273, used across models like the E-Class, S-Class, GL-Class, CL-Class, SL-Class, and CLS-Class. With a bore and stroke of 92.9 mm × 86 mm, the M278 is available in several output configurations despite sharing the same displacement.
The standard version produces 320 kW (435 PS) and 700 N·m of torque at 1,800–3,500 rpm, powering models such as the S-Class, CL-Class, SL-Class, and GL550. A detuned variant for the CLS-Class, E-Class, and M-Class delivers 300 kW (408 PS) and 600 N·m at 1,600 rpm. Another version used in the GL450 outputs 270 kW (367 PS) and 550 N·m. In later S-Class models, power was raised to 335 kW (455 PS) while torque remained at 700 N·m. Despite differing outputs, these models typically retain the "550" badge regardless of actual engine displacement.

Car Engine Parts Diagram

Let us take a look at a detailed car engine parts diagram, which highlights the essential internal components of an engine. This type of diagram helps us visualize the exact location and arrangement of each part. It typically includes major elements such as the rocker cover, rocker arms, valve springs, cylinder head, spark plugs, valves, engine block, pistons, connecting rods, crankshaft, camshaft, timing chain, oil pump, oil pan, and flywheel. Also shown are related parts like the ignition distributor, fuel pump, gaskets, and distribution components. By referring to such a diagram, we can gain a better understanding of how these parts interact to power a vehicle's engine.
