Product Description
The 1.6-liter Toyota 4A-GE gasoline engine, produced from 1983 to 2002, is a legendary member of Toyota’s A-series, known for its sporty character, high revving nature, and tuning potential. Developed with Yamaha Motor Company, it features an aluminum 16-valve head, a cast-iron block, a timing belt drive, and requires manual valve adjustment. Over its lifetime, it evolved through five main generations: the Blue Top (1983–1987) with T-VIS and 110–130 hp; the Red & Black Top (1987–1992) with a reinforced block; the Red Top Smallport (1989–1991) with higher compression and 140 hp; the Silver Top (1991–1995) with a 20-valve head, individual throttles, and VVT for 160 hp; and the Black Top (1995–2002), which reached a peak of 165 hp with larger throttles, revised cams, and 11.0 compression. Renowned for its balance of performance and reliability, the 4A-GE remains a favorite among enthusiasts and engine swap projects worldwide.
